The best voice assistant for you is the one that helps with a task you repeat, on the device you actually use. A smooth demonstration is interesting. A conversation that gets your names, constraints and corrections right is more useful.
Where to start: Try Gemini Live for mobile, back-and-forth help, including supported camera and screen-sharing workflows. Try ChatGPT Voice for conversations that continue in a chat with text and supported tools. In ChatGPT, distinguish the newer Live experience from Advanced Voice: their visual capabilities and allowances are not identical. This is a documentation-based comparison, not a claimed hands-on speed or accuracy test.
First, compare the right experiences
Google describes Gemini Live as a mobile conversation feature that supports interruptions, brainstorming and spoken practice. Its Android documentation also describes camera and screen sharing. Availability can vary by device, account and rollout; a feature shown in an Android help page should not be assumed to behave identically on every iPhone.
OpenAI’s current documentation distinguishes Live from Advanced Voice. Live can work with text and images and use supported chat tools, but it does not currently support live video or screen sharing. Those visual workflows remain available to eligible subscribers using Advanced in the mobile apps. Check which experience is active before comparing the products.
Free and paid limits: check the feature, not just the plan name
OpenAI’s October documentation lists limited Free access and, for Plus, three hours of the listed Live model over a rolling 24-hour period. Other plans have different allowances. Video and screen-sharing limits are separate considerations. The in-product limit notice is more useful than an old screenshot of a plan comparison.
Google’s Gemini limits page describes compute-based allowances that depend on the model, feature, prompt complexity and conversation length, with paid plans expanding access. That general allowance should not be rewritten as a universal, guaranteed number of Gemini Live minutes. Check your account and the current feature documentation.
For interview practice, use the same brief
Give both assistants a role, a goal and a clear stopping point. For example: “Act as an interviewer for an entry-level project coordinator role. Ask one question at a time. After five questions, give me three specific improvements.”
Then test the interaction you care about. Can you interrupt to clarify a question? Does it remember that you asked for one question at a time? Does the feedback refer to what you actually said? Record the answers yourself instead of assuming a more enthusiastic voice gave better coaching.
For visual help, check what you are sharing
If the task involves a menu, an object or a phone screen, confirm that your selected mode can receive that input. A still image, live camera stream and full-screen share are different inputs. Ask the assistant to describe what it can actually see before trusting a detailed answer.
Keep private messages, account numbers and passwords out of the shared view. Use a non-sensitive example for the comparison. A useful answer does not require giving an assistant access to everything on your screen.
For planning, test whether the constraints survive
Try a small task with three constraints: “Plan three easy dinners for two people. No oven, no mushrooms, and one shared grocery list.” After the answer, change one condition. Ask for a shorter version and check whether the earlier requirements remain intact.
This is a proposed comparison task, not a report that either product passed it. It gives you something concrete to evaluate: missed ingredients, repeated questions, useful follow-ups and how much editing you need afterward. Our AI verification guide covers a similar habit for work.
A fair ten-minute comparison
- Use the same phone, connection and quiet room where practical.
- Write down each plan, app version and selected mode.
- Give both assistants the same short task.
- Interrupt once to correct a detail.
- Ask for a final summary you can check.
- Compare correctness, missed constraints and effort—not just speaking style.
Do not turn a response-time impression into a benchmark without measurement. Network conditions, context length and selected modes can change the result.
Which should you choose?
If a particular mobile visual workflow is essential, start by confirming that workflow on your own device. If continuing between voice and written chat matters more, test that handoff. Try the available free access before paying specifically for a feature you have not confirmed.
Is one always more accurate?
This guide has no controlled results supporting a universal accuracy winner. Verify important answers in either product.
Does paying guarantee unlimited voice?
No. Read the allowance for the specific plan, mode and feature.
Can I compare ChatGPT Live video with Gemini camera sharing?
Not as equivalent inputs: the current ChatGPT Live documentation excludes live video. Check eligible Advanced Voice access instead.
